Associate Recruitment

Most Cohen and Wolf, P.C. attorneys have never practiced anywhere else.  The firm hires associates who it believes will succeed and spend their careers at Cohen and Wolf, P.C.  Due to the firm’s size and philosophy of staffing cases efficiently and economically for clients, associates are given a great deal of responsibility early in their careers.  It is not unusual for associates to handle matters independently in their first year of practice.

Cohen and Wolf prides itself on selecting highly qualified associates who are eager to take an active role in the firm’s practice.  Typically, associates are assigned to the firm’s litigation practice or to its transactional practice.  Within these broad areas, associates are encouraged to develop their practices in areas that interest them and meet the firm’s needs.  Assignments to all associates are coordinated through specific partners in each practice group.

The firm assigns a senior associate as a mentor to each new associate.  In-house training is conducted on a regular basis, including monthly associate case work-shopping sessions.  In addition, associates are encouraged to attend continuing legal education seminars outside the office.

Cohen and Wolf partners maintain an “open-door” policy that fosters an environment of communication between all attorneys.  Associates typically receive feedback on their work product on an ongoing basis.  Formal evaluations are conducted on an annual basis.

The firm’s commitment to community service is imbued to associates as well.  All attorneys are urged to become involved in meaningful activities outside the office.  Cohen and Wolf, P.C.’s proud tradition of community service is well known throughout Connecticut.

Compensation & Benefits

Cohen and Wolf, P.C. associates are compensated at a salary level competitive with other law firms in the area.  The firm also provides for health insurance; life insurance; long-term disability insurance; 401(k); paid vacation; partially paid FMLA leave; dependent care assistance; annual bonus; payment of membership fees in national, state and local bar associations; paid continuing legal education; payment of Connecticut’s occupational tax; bar examination expenses; and moving expenses, where applicable.

Associate Testimonials

Deborah Steinberg Erickson
Duke University; The George Washington University Law School, 2006

"One advantage of joining a firm our size (a mid-sized regional firm) is that it is small enough that associates have significant responsibility and client contact early on, and large enough that there are many attorney mentors to turn to for leadership, advice, and support. From the first day, I was handling files on my own and within a year I had tried (and won) my first case."

DAVID M. MOROSAN
University of Connecticut; Quinnipiac University School of Law, 2006

"After practicing at a large Wall Street firm, I came to Cohen and Wolf, P.C. in an effort to achieve a better balance between my personal and professional life. Not only has my quality of life dramatically improved, but I have maintained the ability to take part in complex work and challenging assignments. I have taken on more responsibility in transactions and had more direct client contact. In addition, having the time to get involved in bar association committee work and community activities will make me a more well-rounded lawyer."

RACHEL A. PENCU
Washington University; University of Connecticut School of Law, 2004

“It didn’t take long after my interview at Cohen and Wolf to realize that this is where I wanted to practice – both as a summer associate while in law school and as a full time associate upon graduation. Cohen and Wolf is more than just a place to work – it is truly a "quality of life" firm. At Cohen and Wolf, you’re given the opportunity to learn from the best, develop your own legal skills and foster both personal and professional relationships. The attorneys who practice here are proud to be a part of the firm and it shows in everything they do."

Summer Associate Program

Cohen and Wolf, P.C.’s summer program provides law students with an informal environment and mirrors the first-year associate experience.  The firm makes every effort to involve summer associates in all areas of practice and expose them to courtroom proceedings, depositions, client meetings, and negotiations.

Upon arriving at the firm, each summer associate is assigned a “mentor,” an attorney who will help guide them through the summer and who will generally serve as a sounding board to answer questions or concerns which might arise.

The primary objective of our summer program is to provide students with quality work assignments and professional experiences representative of the depth and complexity of our practice.  Summer associates are encouraged to participate in all areas of the firm’s practice and undertake meaningful roles in the cases to which they are assigned.

Most significantly, Cohen and Wolf, P.C. is committed to providing hands-on training and continuous feedback from the attorneys with whom summer associates work.  In addition, each summer associate receives a mid- and end-of-summer review of his or her performance.  Also, through the Summer Associate Coordinator, work assignments are structured in order to ensure that workloads are properly managed.

An important part of the summer program is dedicated to integrating the summer associates with the attorneys in the firm.  Throughout the program, Cohen and Wolf, P.C. hosts several social events for summer associates and all attorneys, including receptions, excursions around Connecticut and New York, and weekly summer intramural softball games.

The firm’s summer associate program accurately reflects life as a full time associate.  Cohen and Wolf is proud of its history of hiring entry-level associates through the program.
