Best Lawyers is based entirely on a peer review system. Lawyers in various specialties are asked to rate the abilities of other lawyers in the same specialty and geographic area by answering the question: "If you could not handle a case yourself, to whom would you refer it?" The question is posed on a ballot sent to over 30,000 lawyers across the country each year and supplemented with extensive phone interviews and reviews of disciplinary records. Best Lawyers has been ranking attorneys across America since 1983.
