Telecommunications Lawyer Named Shareholder

    Bridgeport, January 10, 2007 – Cohen and Wolf, P.C., has announced that Julie D. Kohler , one of Connecticut’s top telecommunications lawyers, has been elected to the position of shareholder in the firm. Ms. Kohler, who is based in the law firm’s Bridgeport office, practices in the areas of telecommunications, land use and zoning, real estate, utility and municipal law.

    Ms. Kohler, who lives in Woodbridge, has served as Of Counsel to Cohen and Wolf, P.C. since joining the firm in 2005.   Ms. Kohler focuses on all aspects of utility and land use regulation before state and local administrative agencies, with an emphasis on telecommunications and energy regulation and facility siting, as well as planning, zoning, and wetland permits and approvals.   She is a member of the firm's Land Use & Zoning, Litigation, Municipal, and Telecommunications and Utilities Groups.

    Ms. Kohler is one of only a few lawyers in Connecticut who represent national telecommunications providers and tower companies in the negotiation, acquisition and implementation of wireless telecommunications facilities. In this unique role, she has been instrumental in the development of the wireless telecommunication infrastructure in Connecticut since 1995. She has acted as local in-house counsel for a major wireless telecommunication company, and currently represents national wireless telecommunication companies and numerous national and local tower development companies, providing counsel regarding regulatory compliance, transactional due diligence, litigation matters, and zoning and environmental review and approval processes.

    Ms. Kohler represents both individuals and municipal clients in utility proceedings, specifically defending against the ramifications of utility infrastructure siting. Retained to protect its residents from the anticipated impacts, she represented the City of Milford in its two year opposition to the Middletown to Norwalk transmission project. Similarly, she is presently challenging the proposed siting of a transmission substation in a residential neighborhood in Trumbull

    Ms. Kohler regularly appears before the Connecticut Siting Council and before the Department of Public Utility Control, in addition to other state and local administrative agencies related to energy and telecommunications facility siting matters.

    Ms. Kohler also appears regularly before planning, zoning, and wetlands boards and commissions in Connecticut on behalf of the firm's land use clients.  She has extensive experience in all phases of property development, including lease negotiation, zoning representation, title work and zoning compliance. She has represented local and national real estate developers, businesses, individuals, management companies, franchises, neighborhood associations and municipalities in land use matters. Her practice includes due diligence, land use application filing and advocacy, and any associated court-related proceedings.

    In addition to her busy practice, Ms. Kohler lectures locally and internationally on the subject of telecommunications law. She is a member of the Fairfield Network of Executive Women and has authored articles in Women Magazine, and written a column entitled “Women and the Law” published by the Journal Register Papers.

    Ms. Kohler is a member of the Connecticut, New York and District of Columbia Bar Associations. She is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association's Planning & Zoning, Public Utility Law and Real Property Sections. She is admitted to practice in Connecticut, New York,

    Ms. Kohler earned her J.D. in 1995 from Quinnipiac University School of Law.  She received her B.S. in 1989 from Sacred Heart University.
